Compare the calories burned hiking to a variety of other activities at the calories burned chart.

Calories burned hiking are great, because hiking is, for most people anyway, a fun and enjoyable activity, and you can look at any calories burned hiking as bonus burned calories, or burned calories that you didn’t have to work for.

And hiking really is a great experience which can also burn a lot of calories and lose weight. The large amounts of walking up and down hills and the hopefully not too heavy backpacks make it a great way to get a lot of exercise in while still enjoying yourself.

Calories burned hiking are also likely to stay off because you probably wont want to bring a lot of food with you while hiking, since food is heavy, and so you can create a calorie deficit fairly easily and experience weight loss as a result. Just remember that you should always bring a little extra food when hiking for safety reasons. Burning calories hiking is good, but you don’t want to be stranded in the backcountry without food either.

Hiking Calories Burned

The amount of calories burned hiking depends on how much you weigh. It also depends on whether you are wearing a backpack or not while you are hiking. You should also take in to account the terrain when hiking. The amount of calories burned hiking a mountain, for instance, will be different than if you only tackle a cross country hiking trail.

All data is from the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise journal, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Calories Burned Hiking With a Backpack

  • If you weigh roughly 130 pounds: 413 calories burned hiking per hour
  • If you weigh roughly 155 pounds: 493 calories burned per hour
  • If you weigh roughly 180 pounds: 572 calories burned per hour

  • If you weigh roughly 180 pounds: 490 calories burned per hour
  • If you weigh roughly 205 pounds: 558 calories burned per hour

So obviously, burning calories hiking is best done with a backpack, rather than without one. But even on a day hike you should be taking things like water, a bit of extra food, some extra layers and a few emergency supplies with you, so it’s always easy to bring a backpack with you.

And if you are really looking for some self punishment consider taking along extra weight, like a few extra water bottles, to help burn a few more calories. If you’re hiking with a group, you can up your calories burned hiking by volunteering to be the group pack mule and carrying everyone’s gear.

Think creatively and you’ll be burning calories hiking in no time.
