The amount of calories burned water aerobics isn’t as much as some other, more traditional aerobic activities such as running or swimming laps, but water aerobics is still a great activity to burn calories.
Water aerobics has a somewhat unique appeal among the various aerobic activities because it is low impact and especially good for those with injuries or joint problems, for which more demanding aerobic activity is out of the question. Being in the pool is also a lot of fun, and a rewarding experience for a lot of people. It’s certainly better than pounding the pavement in the sun by running.

- If you weigh roughly 155 pounds: 281 calories burned per hour
- If you weigh roughly 180 pounds: 327 calories burned per hour
- If you weigh roughly 205 pounds: 372 calories burned per hour
So as you can see from the above list, the amount of calories burned doing water aerobics isn’t spectacularly high, but it isn’t nothing either. So while you may not burn a lot of calories right away, you will if you keep at it, and you will lose weight over the long term if you go regularly.
And for some people who have joint problems or other injuries, and aren’t able to do a lot of different kinds of aerobic activity, water aerobics is ideal because it allows you to be active and burn calories without putting yourself at risk for further injury.
