Yoga is an immensely popular form of exercise that can result in a significant amount of calories burned. Of course, the amount of calories burned doing yoga will vary, depending upon several different things, including the kind of yoga you are doing.
There are certain types of yoga, for instance, that are far more strenuous than others, and resemble body weight work outs as much as they resemble a low key stretching routine.
There are other kinds of yoga that are done in extremely warm temperatures, which also helps you to burn calories and lose weight as a result. Whatever yoga you choose to do, however, the calories burned doing yoga will be fairly significant, and over time, they will add up to a significant amount of weight loss.

- If you weigh roughly 155 pounds: 281 calories burned per hour
- If you weigh roughly 180 pounds: 327 calories burned per hour
- If you weigh roughly 205 pounds: 372 calories burned per hour
So the amount of calories burned doing yoga isn’t huge. It’s certainly not comparable to the amount of calories burned swimming, for instance.
But swimming is also a lot of work, whereas yoga is a little more low key and tends to be a lot more enjoyable. And above all else, you should burn calories and lose weight doing something that you enjoy. If you’re not having fun then there is no way you will continue whatever it is that you are doing to burn calories in the long term.
